Second Graders Explore Piet Modrian

Second Graders listened to "Broadway Boogie Woogie" and learned all about dutch artist, Piet Modrian.  They used black lines and primary colors to create a work that resembled his Neo Plasticism art. It was a lot of work to cover all of our pencil marks with black lines but we got in some good gluing practice in the process. Students thought maybe his art was inspired by looking at the streets of New York from an airplane or a rooftop.

First Grade Butterflies

First Graders had a lot of fun creating butterflies in art class after learning about them in homeroom. We began by watching The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and studying his collage technique. We made some specialty papers just like him using primary colors to create the secondary colors. Students loved using the paint, fold, and open approach to create a symmetrical butterfly.  I love the look of surprise on their faces as they opened their papers!

You would not believe these kids!  They are so creative!  One of my favorite first art projects for kindergarteners is to have them draw a self-portrait and a family portrait. I love learning all about your families in art class through their drawings. We talked briefly about how even if families move or change they are always part of your family, no matter what.  I used the example that my sister lives very far away yet I will always call her my sister.  We closed the hour with the concept that we are also a part of God's family and that he will love us no matter what!  

You will want to keep these drawings for their high school graduation open house. They are precious! 

Third Grade Art at Rose Park

Third Graders this month have been working on an interesting project in art.  We are working together to create some worship banners.  In class we thought about all kinds of reasons to create art and one of them was to use it to help us in worship to focus on God.  They came up with around 10 reasons to create art! 

Dear Parents,

I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Amy Luce and I am the new art teacher at Rose 

Park for K - 4th grade. This is my first year teaching at Rose Park.  For the last four years I have 

taught art to students (K - 6) on Wednesday at Pine Ridge for the Holland Christian Home 

School (HC2) program. I’ll continue to teach these students on Wednesdays and will be at Rose 

Park the rest of the week. I have been enjoying getting to know your child as we gather each 

week as we create some art together, learn about artists, and celebrate God through art.

A little about me: I am married to Mike Luce and we have three children at Zeeland 

Christian School.  Two of them are in middle school and one in elementary, hence I feel very 

comfortable with children this age. I am often asked “What’s your favorite medium?” I love

exploring all of them but admit I am partial to watercolor because it enables me to spend time 

outdoors and it travels well. So, not only I do have a passion for teaching and creating art, I love 

the “story” behind art and learning about the culture in which the art was created.  

This year I am pleased to report that I have art 60 minutes a week with your child.  This 

enables me to introduce our lesson, demonstrate a technique, and create.  This also permits students 

to have more uninterrupted time to create.  What a blessing!

It is my hope that this year in art your child will see God’s love through me--both 

His love for them and His love for his creation.  I also hope that their art will be meaningful and 

celebratory as we explore and work together in community. If you have any concerns or

It's all in your Perspective

On a recent outdoor adventure a child caught a crayfish and ran to show me.  I snapped this picture as it tried to climb out of the net. Can you see it there? I like the way the lines repeat over and over to create a complex pattern. The person's shadow creates some telling shapes too!  Do you think it was a boy or a girl holding the net? My prayer for you this summer is that you are taking in the beauty of God's world and storing up memories for our upcoming year in art at Rosepark.  As you walk the waters edge, bike a path, or read under the patterns of a tree, I pray you're being refreshed and I can't wait to see where God's love will take us this coming school year.
